The PDA name comes from personal digital assistant, but is also called palm computer. But that doesn’t mean that this is a smaller version of a computer, but it has the role to be an extension of your PC, because it can be useful when you are not home and you want to check your day planning. So the PDA has all your personal information that you may need on daily basis, like contact informations, a list of appointments and to do list, even has the option to access the internet. So the PDAs are now the latest gadgets, because the manufacturers gave them also multimedia features.
The first PDA it is believed to be the Sharp Wizard, which was released in the 1980s. Since then, many types of PDA were developed. One of them is the Palm PDA, which offers many applications to its users. The Pocket PC is in fact the Windows Mobile PDAs, so it has some of the Microsoft applications we all use, like Microsoft Word or Excel. This type of PDA even has a virtual writing area, and uses programs like Letter Recognizer. Smartphones can also be named as a PDA type, because it is a PDA that has also some mobile features, and you can subscribe to a cellular service provider. The good things about this smartphones are that you can choose from different types of operating systems, like the famous Windows Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition or the Symbian OS. But these are more modern types, but there is some PDA with basic features. Most of them have options that allow you to have all your contacts and addresses informations ready to use. You can also write to do lists, and set alarms and clock. It also has a calendar available.
Some of them allow to run specialized programs that you might need to use, like Microsoft Office applications, Internet Explorer etc. If you have a break, you can entertain yourself using windows Media Player. But other applications can be also installed, like games or multimedia. Some more specialized software can be also installed, for example the women can install different diet and exercises programs. But the most importing feature of the PDA is that it can be synchronized with the computer. So any data you have on the computer you can store also on the PDA.
